Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment to discuss campaign for Introduction of Four-Day Week

5 Oct 2021, 15:30

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 6 October, to discuss the campaign for the introduction of a four-day working week.

The meeting at 9.30am with representatives from Four Day Week Ireland (4DWI) and the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC) will be broadcast from Committee Room 1 of Leinster House.

Ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Maurice Quinlivan said: “The concept of a four-day working week has been gaining support here in Ireland and across the world in recent years, whereby a four-day week would become the new ‘default’ work arrangement across the economy. Supporters of the proposal believe that a four-day week can be good for business, as well as for workers, families, and the environment, without a loss of pay or productivity.

“Four Day Week Ireland has been making the case for a gradual, steady and managed transition to a shorter working week in all sectors of the economy. The Committee welcomes this opportunity to meet with 4DWI and IBEC to discuss the proposal and looks forward to hearing the view of both groups, including how trials of four-day week schemes have worked in other countries, including Sweden, Japan and New Zealand, and how similar schemes could work in Ireland.”

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 1 can be viewed live on Oireachtas.ie.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
