Committees on Housing, and Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community to hold joint meeting to discuss Expert Group Review of Traveller Accommodation

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community will meet together tomorrow, Tuesday, 12 October, to discuss the Expert Group Review of Traveller Accommodation.

The joint meeting of the two Committees will begin at 3pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House and will comprise two sessions:

  • Session 1 – Peter Burke TD, Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage;
  • Session 2 – Representatives from County and City Management Association and the Irish Traveller Movement. 

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Deputy Steven Matthews, Cathaoirleach of the Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage, said: “Our Committee welcomes this opportunity to meet jointly with our colleagues on the Committee on Key Issue affecting the Traveller Community to discuss the Expert Group Review. We look forward to engaging with Minister Burke and our other stakeholders on the programme for Traveller-specific accommodation in Local Authority areas across the State.”

Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív, Leas-Chathaoirleach of the Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community, said: “The Committee is looking forward to joining with our Housing Committee colleagues at this joint meeting to discuss the Expert Group Review of Traveller Accommodation. This follows on from our series of committee meetings on access to housing and accommodation, including culturally appropriate accommodation. Speaking with the Minister of State and stakeholders, the County and City Management Association and the Irish Traveller Movement, will also allow both Committees highlight the learnings we have gathered on this topic over the last few months.”

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community each have 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
