Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment to begin pre-legislative scrutiny of the General Scheme of Consumer Rights Bill 2021

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 13 October, to begin pre-legislative scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Consumer Rights Bill 2021.

The meeting at 9.30am with officials from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment will be broadcast from Committee Room 1 of Leinster House.

Ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Maurice Quinlivan said: “The principal aim of this Scheme is to give effect to two EU Directives on contracts for the sale of goods and contracts for the supply of digital content and digital services. It further proposes to update and consolidate existing legislation on consumer rights and remedies, and strengthen the enforcement powers of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

“This consolidation of legislation provided for aims to provide a legislative framework that is more up-to-date and responsive to the needs of consumers and businesses. The Committee welcomes this opportunity to scrutinise this legislation and looks forward to discussing the Heads of the Bill with the Department officials.”

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
