12 Oct 2021, 09:53

The Joint Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development and the Islands will resume its discussion on the proposed National Action Plan for Island Development at a meeting tomorrow, Wednesday 13 October in Leinster House.

Bairbre Nic Aongusa, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Rural and Community Development and Bríd Ní Chonghaile, Assistant Principal in the Department’s Islands Unit will attend the meeting in Committee Room 3 at 9.30am.

Committee Cathaoirleach Denis Naughten TD said: “Having heard the voice of islanders last week the Committee welcomes this opportunity to hear from the Department about the development of a national policy for the islands.

“An Interdepartmental Committee of Island Development was set up in 2019 with a mandate to develop a cross-Government policy for island development. The Committee welcomes this opportunity to get an update on its work, the consultation process it has engaged in and the challenges and opportunities it has identified to date for our islands’ communities.

“The islands and their communities are a vital part of our rural history and heritage. It is essential that the promised plan for island development not only maintains our island populations but allows our island communities to grow and flourish.”
