Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media to discuss governance in the Irish Athletic Boxing Association with IABA and Sport Ireland

2 Nov 2021, 17:00

The Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 3 November, to discuss governance in the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) with representatives of the IABA and Sport Ireland.

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 3pm in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Niamh Smyth said: “Amateur boxing has been one of Ireland’s most successful sports, with medal winning performances at Olympic, World and European games. We all took great pride and joy at the success of our boxers in the Rio Olympics this summer, especially Kellie Harrington’s gold medal triumph.

“Public funding through Sport Ireland has been key to this success, with the IABA receiving some €8.4 million from the public purse since 2017. The Committee looks forward to discussing governance with the IABA as it continues its review and consultation around these issues and also to hearing Sport Ireland’s perspective on these matters.”

The Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 1 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
