Good Friday Committee to meet with representatives from Justice for the Forgotten

2 Dec 2021, 08:00

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will meet at 13.30 on Thursday, December 02 with representatives from Justice for the Forgotten.

Justice for the Forgotten represents those affected by the Dublin/Monaghan bombings (1974), the Dundalk bombing (1975) and Castleblayney bombing (1976) and the murder of John Francis Green (1975) and the Miami Showband murders in Northern Ireland (1975).

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House.

The Committee is due to hear from:

  • Margaret Urwin (Justice for the Forgotten)
  • Alan Brecknell (Justice for the Forgotten)

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Fergus O’Dowd TD said:  “We welcome the opportunity to hear from representatives from Justice for the Forgotten. This is a timely opportunity to discuss what steps the Irish Government can take towards dealing with conflict legacy and what is required to meet the needs of victims and survivors.”

“The Committee has noted with serious concern, plans by Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Brandon Lewis for a statute of limitations that would end all prosecutions for Troubles incidents up to April 1998. This would apply to British military veterans and ex -paramilitaries. These plans would also end all legacy inquests and civil actions related to the conflict.”

“Ireland has faced challenges to progressing specific legacy cases in recent years due to Brexit, the collapse of the power sharing administration in Northern Ireland and the pandemic. We look forward to discussing this and other issues with representatives.”
