Health Committee to discuss closure of the Owenacurra Centre in Cork with representatives from the HSE

6 Dec 2021, 17:10

The Joint Committee on Health will meet tomorrow, Tuesday 07 December, to discuss the closure of the Owenacurra Centre in Midleton, Co Cork. Representatives from the HSE are due to address the meeting at 11am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Seán Crowe said: “The Owenacurra Centre is the only long stay residential and respite facility for people with severe and enduring mental health difficulties in East Cork. The 24 bed facility is currently home to 19 residents and also provides day services for its residents and other clients of the local Community Mental Health Team.”

“Families of the centre’s residents were told in June 2021 that the centre would be closed on a phased basis by the end of October 2021 but this date has been extended as many residents were left waiting to hear where and when they will be re-housed.”

“Tomorrow’s meeting follows on from a previous meeting with HSE representatives to discuss the planned closure.

“The HSE has said it has no alternative but to shut the centre as the only way to make use of the site is if the existing buildings were demolished.

“It is clear that the uncertainty around the future of the centre and mental health service provision is causing distress and concern to families of the centre’s residents and stakeholders for mental health in the East Cork region.”

“Committee members welcome the opportunity to discuss the planned closure and how to mitigate against the impact it will have on the Centre’s residents and families.”
