Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action to consider Ireland’s first Carbon Budgets up to 2025 with Government Departments

17 Jan 2022, 15:55

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 18 January, with senior officials from Government Departments to resume consideration of Ireland’s first Carbon Budgets for the period up to 2025.

The meeting at 11am in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House will hear from officials from the Departments of the Taoiseach; Environment, Climate and Communications; Transport; Agriculture, Food and the Marine; Housing, Local Government and Heritage; and from representatives of the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA).

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Leddin said: “Carbon Budgets set the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are permitted during the budget period, which in this case is up to 2025. Last week the Committee held three engagements with key stakeholders and experts to discuss these Carbon Budgets, which were referred to the Committee by the Minister last month.

“We now look forward to engaging with officials from the Departments and the LGMA, in particular to consider their role in delivering the budgets and how these budgets intersect with the Climate Plan. The Committee will also consider whether the budgets are consistent with national objectives for reducing emissions, international best practice and with due regard given to climate justice.”

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
