18 Jan 2022, 16:21

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will discuss the European Court of Auditors 2020 Annual Report at a meeting in Leinster House, Committee Room 4 on Wednesday January 19th at 9.30am.

Tony Murphy, Irish member of the European Court of Auditors (ECA) will appear before the Committee virtually for the discussion.

Speaking before the meeting Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Joe McHugh said: “The European Court of Auditors Annual Report for the financial year 2020 was published in October 2021. The report analyses the EU financial accounts for the year 2020, the final year of the 2014-2020 multiannual financial framework period.”

“Ireland is a net contributor of €229 million to the EU and it is likely our contribution will increase in the years ahead. The European Court of Auditors (ECA), as the independent external auditor of the EU, helps to ensure that Irish and EU citizens know how and where their money is being spent.”

“This month marks one year since the UK left the EU. The €5 billion Brexit Adjustment Reserve fund is available for Member States to mitigate against the adverse economic and social effects of Brexit.

The Brexit Adjustment Reserve (BAR) is a €5 billion fund for member states to help counter the adverse economic and social effects of the withdrawal of the UK from the EU. The Committee notes that Ireland is the largest recipient of BAR funding.”

“The Committee welcomes this opportunity to meet with Tony Murphy to discuss the findings of the ECA’s most recent annual report on how money is being spent and recommendations on future spending; Brexit and the level of spending required for the Covid-19 pandemic response.”
