Committee of Public Accounts to examine the Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s 2020 Financial Statements

2 Feb 2022, 15:45

The Committee of Public Accounts (PAC) will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 3 February, with representatives of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and officials from the Department of Transport to examine TII’s 2020 Financial Statements.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will be joined by the C&AG, Seamus McCarthy, and will be split into two sessions.

The morning session, from 9.30am-12.30pm, will be with representatives of TII, led by Chief Executive Peter Walsh, and Department officials. During the afternoon session, beginning at 1.30pm, the Committee will consider correspondence and other business of the Committee.

PAC Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Stanley said: “TII has overall responsibility for the development and maintenance of the national road network, development of light rail and metro projects, and management of the Luas operating and maintenance contract.

“TII’s total expenditure in 2020 was nearly €1.5billion, of which nearly €1.1billion was spent on road construction, improvement and maintenance. €237million was spent on Public Private Partnership (PPP) contacts, tunnel operations and tolling schemes, and €83million on Light rail and metro projects.

“Areas the Committee would like to examine include expenditure on the Metrolink scheme and Luas projects in Dublin, and spending on improving and maintaining the State’s road network. Other matters of interest include PPP Scheme Operation Charges for tolled and non-tolled motorway schemes, and the Public Service Obligation (PSO) expenditure on Luas, particularly in light of the €55million revenue shortfall related to the drop in passenger numbers in 2020 due to the COVID-19 public health restrictions.

“Following our meeting with the National Transport Authority last week, the Committee now looks forward to examining TII’s 2020 Financial Statements and related matters with Mr Walsh and his colleagues.”

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

PAC is a standing committee of Dáil Éireann which focuses on ensuring public services are run efficiently and achieve value for money. Further information on the role and remit of the Committee can be found here.
