8 Feb 2022, 20:15

The Joint Committee on Health will meet tomorrow, Wednesday February 09 for a discussion on the issues relating to homecare with representatives.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House and will split into two sessions.

Session One - 09:30 - 11:00
Representatives from Home and Community Care Ireland (HCCI)
Representatives from Age Action Ireland
Representatives from Care Alliance Ireland

Session 2: 11:00 – 12:30
Discussion on the issues relating to homecare
Representatives from Services Industrial Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU)
Representatives from Fórsa

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Sean Crowe said: “The purpose of this morning's meeting is to consider home care services with those who represent those on the ground in homecare services.”

“The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted on home care provision and has highlighted the invaluable role played by home care workers in preventing the spread of the virus and protecting our most vulnerable citizens.”

“There are many challenges facing the Irish healthcare system and we know that home supports are critical for older people but that many face a postcard lottery when it comes to the provision of adequate, quality homecare support.”

“Demographic changes mean life expectancy is rising with many people expected to live well into their 80s. While many will live healthy, independent lives – their increase in age comes with an increased risk of disability.”

“It is clear that homecare supports are needed to maintain their health and wellbeing and to allow them to live independently in their communities and to avoid residential and hospital care stays – particularly when the risk to their health is heightened by Covid-19.”

“We look forward to discussing the opportunities and challenges in the homecare sector and other related issues.”
