29 Mar 2022, 16:44

Joint Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development will meet tomorrow, Wednesday March 30th, to discuss sustainable energy on offshore islands.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House between 9:30-12:30.

Officials from the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications and representatives from Aran Islands Energy Co-Operative will address the meeting.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Denis Naughten said: “The Committee welcomes the opportunity to discuss sustainable energy on our offshore islands. The Climate Action Plan 2021 sets out a roadmap to ensure up to 80% of our electricity will come from renewable sources by 2030.The establishment of an offshore renewable development authority, to drive the sector forward in a strategic manner was approved by the Dáil last year.”

“With the ongoing war in Ukraine and rising inflation, a strategy to develop Ireland’s offshore energy capacity is needed to help drive down the cost of utilities in the longer term and create jobs in the renewable energy sector.”

“We look forward to discussing these and other related matters with representatives tomorrow.”
