Good Friday Committee to meet with representatives from the Truth and Justice Movement

6 Apr 2022, 17:52

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will meet tomorrow, Thursday March 7th, for engagement with the Truth and Justice Movement. The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 13:30-16:30.

Raymond McCord, Cathy McIlvenny and Michael Monaghan from the Truth and Justice Movement are due to attend.

The Truth and Justice Movement is a cross-community group of victims and campaigners who lost loved ones during the Troubles.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Fergus O’Dowd said: “We look forward to hearing from representatives from the Truth and Justice Movement. Raymond McCord, whose son was murdered by loyalist paramilitaries in Belfast in 1997, and the group have been vocal about the proposed amnesty for Troubles related offences.”

“The proposals published by the British Government last year for a statue of limitations i.e an amnesty – to end criminal investigations and inquests relating to Troubles related incidents represent a serious unilateral departure from the agreement between the British and Irish Government and political parties in Northern Ireland.”

“It is incumbent on all representatives to work to address Legacy issues for the sake of victims and their families.”
