6 Apr 2022, 09:45

The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will meet this evening to discuss dog breeding, microchipping and related matters.

The meeting at 5.30pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will be split into two sessions to hear from:

  • 5.30pm-7pm – Artificial Canine Insemination/Canine Fertility Clinics, Ear Cropping and Microchipping Legislation, with representatives of Dogs Trust Ireland and the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA).
  • 7pm-8.30pm – Review of Dog Breeding Establishments Act 2010, with representatives of Dogs Trust Ireland.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Jackie Cahill said: “Following our discussions last week with representatives of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and the Veterinary Council of Ireland on the implementation of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013, we now welcome this opportunity to hear the views of Dogs Trust Ireland and the ISPCA on canine welfare, artificial insemination, canine fertility clinics, ear cropping and microchipping. Members also look forward to reviewing the 2010 Act with Dogs Trust, in particular how they believe the legislation can be strengthened to improve dog welfare in Ireland.”
