26 Apr 2022, 17:09

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet on Wednesday April 27th for engagement with the Moldovan and Romanian Ambassadors to discuss the ongoing humanitarian crisis following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Committee’s recent fact-finding mission to Romania and Moldova.

The meeting will take in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House between 9:30:12:30.

The Committee will hear from the Ambassador of Moldova to Ireland Larisa Miculet and the Ambassador of Romania to Ireland Laurenţiu-Mihai Ştefan.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Joe McHugh said: “The war in Ukraine has entered its second month so the Committee welcomes this opportunity to discuss the European Union’s ongoing response to the humanitarian crisis with the Ambassadors. Romania and Moldova have taken in tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees in recent weeks.”

“The Committee will also discuss our recent fact-finding mission to Romania and Moldova. Members of the Committee met with political representatives, members of the UNHCR and stakeholders working on the ground.”

“We also visited Roxempo – one of the largest refugee centres in Europe where we discussed best practice when it comes to aiding refugees with the centre manager. Members gained a deeper understanding of the problems and issues facing refugees and we look forward to sharing our learnings from the mission and how Romania and Moldova are dealing with the humanitarian crisis.”
