Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach to discuss recent proposed appointment of CMO to university research post

26 Apr 2022, 17:15

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 27 April, with Martin Fraser, Secretary General of the Department of the Taoiseach, to discuss the recent proposed appointment of the Chief Medical Officer to a university research post.

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 1.30pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy John McGuinness said: “The recent proposed secondment of the Chief Medical Officer from the Department of Health to a university research post generated considerable public commentary and concern.

“The Committee believes it is important that the protocols, processes and procedures for the secondment of public and civil servants to other bodies, including to education and research posts in third-level institutions, should be clearly laid out. We look forward to examining this in detail with Mr Fraser.”

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and Taoiseach has 13 Members, nine from the Dáil and four from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
