Disability Matters Committee to discuss employment and the UNCPRD with representatives from the Central Remedial Clinic and Social Farming Ireland

11 May 2022, 16:38

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters will meet on Thursday May 12th to discuss employment and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). The meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House between 09:30 - 11:00.

Representatives from the Central Remedial Clinic (CRC) and Social Farming Ireland are due to appear.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Moynihan said: “Considering that in Ireland people with disabilities are half as likely to be in employment as others of working age and Ireland is the country with the lowest employment rate of people with disabilities in the EU, it is a priority of the Committee to consider the topic of employment and UNCRPD. This meeting will be the first meeting in a module on employment and UNCRPD that the Committee intend to hold.”

We look forward to discussing this topic with representatives from the CRC and Social Farming Ireland. CRC helps to increase employment skills and employability of people with disabilities and improve their career prospects. Social Farming Ireland helps to improve the level of social confidence of people with disabilities and help them progress to further training/education while enabling more meaningful inclusion in the community.

The UNCRPD plays a strong role in ensuring that people with disabilities have equal access to employment and their rights are upheld.”

“We welcome the opportunity in particular to hear from individuals who took part in courses provided by the CRC and Social Farming Ireland and to gaining their insights on employment and the UNCRPD.”
