Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Kieran O’Donnell said: “In light of the high number of tragic road deaths recently over the June bank holiday weekend, the Committee welcomes the opportunity to meet with the Road Safety Authority, the Medical Bureau of Road Safety and An Garda Síochána to receive an update to the Government Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 and to discuss what further measures can be introduced to reduce road fatalities and accidents.

“Over the bank holiday weekend there were 8 road fatalities, with a latest reported 83 road fatalities to date this year, which is a stark 32 more road deaths as compared to this time last year. Furthermore, there are a reported 17 motorcyclists’ deaths already this year as against 21 overall for last year. In addition, detections for drink driving are reported as up a quarter so far this year.

“These road fatalities are a great human tragedy and our Committee will be asking what specific actions are now being put in place to reduce this unacceptable level of road deaths.“
