Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage to discuss Right to Housing

4 Jul 2022, 17:10

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 5 July, to discuss the Right to Housing with Colm O'Cinneide, Professor of Law, University College London, Faculty of Laws, and representatives from Home For Good.

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 3pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Steven Matthews said: “Ireland has been living with a housing crisis lack of accommodation and homelessness for the last decade. As a consequence there have been increasing calls for a right to housing to be enshrined in the Constitution. This would obviously require an amendment to the Constitution to be put to the people in a referendum. The Committee looks forward to examining the pros and cons of such an approach with our stakeholders, as well as possible wordings of any amendment and the timescale for any referendum.”

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
