The Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community (2023) will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 10 October, to discuss Issues pertaining to the human rights of Travellers and Roma with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O’Flaherty.
Ahead of the meeting at 10am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Senator Eileen Flynn said: “The Committee looks forward to meeting with Commissioner Michael O’Flaherty. We appreciate the work undertaken by the Commissioner to draw attention to the realisation of the rights of Travellers and Roma in Ireland and in other Council of Europe member states.
“The Committee welcomes in particular the opportunity to discuss with Commissioner O’Flaherty some of the key issues which affect Travellers and Roma communities from a human rights perspective, including matters relating to justice and accommodation. These subjects are of particular interest to the Committee and have been at the centre of our work.
“We look forward to hearing the Commissioner’s views on how we can ensure that the Traveller and Roma communities can access a high standard of housing and accommodation and how we can ensure there is equality for all within the justice system.”
The Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community (2023) has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad. The Committee was re-established in June 2023 to continue the work of the previous Committee, whose final report can be found here.
