15 Oct 2024, 14:41

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters will meet on Wednesday October 16th to discuss children with disabilities – Article 7 of the UNCRPD.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 17:30-20:30.

The following representatives are due to appear:
•    Representatives from Independent Living Movement Ireland (ILMI), Paula Soraghan, Community Development Worker and Youth Collective Facilitator & Emma Ward, Member
•    Representatives from AsIAm, Adam Harris, Chief Executive Officer, Niamh Mellerick, Operations Director & Emily Mullock, Community Advocate

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Moynihan said: “The Committee looks forward to hearing from representative groups and children and young people on Article 7 of the UNCRPD. The UNCRPD says that all persons with all types of disabilities must enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms. Article 7 states that children with disabilities enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms on an equal basis with other children. At the heart of Article 7 is the right to have your voice heard. Hearing the direct lived experience of children and young people on the barriers they face, and the advocacy work they carry out is essential to our understanding of Article 7.”
