Joint Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen to consider petition regarding ‘Voting for Irish Born Citizens Abroad’

16 Oct 2024, 15:00

The Joint Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 17 October, to consider a petition regarding Public Petition Number P00060/24 ‘Voting for Irish Born Citizens Abroad’.

The meeting at 1.30pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House will hear from the petitioner, Ms Gráinne McLoughlin.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Martin Browne said: “This petition from Ms Gráinne McLoughlin is calling for the extension of voting rights to Irish citizens living outside Ireland, often called the Irish diaspora. There are more than three million Irish citizens living all over the world, including with large numbers in America, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and across the European Union. The petitioner argues that these citizens have their right to vote in the Constitution and that they should be allowed to vote in Local, Dáil and Presidential elections. The Committee looks forward to examining this petition with Ms McLoughlin.”

The Committee will also consider the following petitions:

  • Public Petition Number P00002/24 ‘Fairness for Existing Work Permit Holders: We want to stay and contribute’ (resumed);
  • Public Petition Number P00053/24 ‘Register the Public Right of Way on Deepwater Quay, Cobh’;
  • Public Petition Number P00055/24 ‘Connect Eating Disorder Care and Provide a Sufficient Level of Service’;
  • Public Petition Number P00056/24 ‘A Review of the Business Improvement District (BIDs) scheme’;
  • Public Petition Number P00057/24 ‘Stop Dublin Airport illegally routing flights over Ratoath and Ashbourne’.

The Joint Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen is a standing Committee of the Houses of the Oireachtas and has 11 Members, seven from the Dáil and four from the Seanad.

The meeting in the Committee Room 4 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
