21 Oct 2024, 16:00

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 22 October, with the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications; and Transport, Eamon Ryan TD, for discussions ahead of COP29.

Ahead of the meeting at 12:30pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Leddin said: “COP29 takes place next month in Azerbaijan and Minister Eamon Ryan and his counterpart from Costa Rica have been appointed ‘Ministerial Pair for Adaptation’ for this year’s global climate conference.

“According to the United Nations, adaptation refers to the solutions, processes, practices and structures that countries and communities need to develop and implement to moderate climate damage and respond to current and future climate change impacts.

“Adaptation and adaptation finance have been identified as a key priority for COP29 and Minister Ryan and his colleague have been tasked with ‘leading consultations on key adaptation issues, to help enhance understanding about current priorities and perspectives, identify possible opportunities and barriers, and facilitate progress on substance’.

“The Committee welcomes this engagement with Minister Ryan and looks forward to discussing his role with regard to adaptation and his wider priorities for COP29 and related matters.”

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
