Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann, Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD, hosts the ‘Mayors for Peace’ Signing Ceremony in the presence of Mr. Kazumi Matsui, Mayor of Hiroshima and President of the Mayors for Peace organisation today, Friday 25th October 2024 in the Library Reading Room in Leinster House. Guests will include Cllr. Joe Neville, Cathaoirleach, Kildare Co. Council. Senator Emer Currie, Member of Ireland-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group and Ms. Donna Cooney, Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin.
Mayors for Peace is an international organisation of cities dedicated to the promotion of peace that was established in 1982 at the initiative of then Mayor of Hiroshima, in response to the deaths of around 140,000 people due to the atomic bombing of the city on August 6, 1945.
Speaking at the event Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD said “It is a privilege to host this event in Leinster House and to welcome Council leaders from across Ireland. The importance of this initiative and the promotion of peace in an ever more dangerous world cannot be underestimated. The Mayors for Peace organisation was founded to bring people together in the face of adversity, and we must continue in our work to build a better future for all.”
