The Ceann Comhairle, Verona Murphy T.D. hosted a celebratory event for St. Brigid’s Day 2025 on Thursday the 30th January in Leinster House. The event showcased and celebrated the traditions associated with St. Brigid’s Day.
The Ceann Comhairle opened the event with a short welcome address to guests in attendance which included Members of the Irish Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, Members of both Houses of the Oireachtas, the Diplomatic Corps, students and teachers from Danescastle National School, Carrig on Bannow, Co. Wexford and staff of the Oireachtas.
Speaking at the event, the Ceann Comhairle said:
"As we celebrate the courage and commitment of St. Brigid, I am not alone when I say we must continue to build an inclusive society, one which respects fundamental rights, which listen to diverse voices, and a society which overcomes challenges to peace and the prevention of conflicts. Let us use this opportunity to renew our dedication to these shared values on St. Brigid's day and every day".
The students from Danescastle National School, Co. Wexford performed a musical element with a variety of traditional Irish musical instruments including; button accordion, fiddle, tin whistle, and the harp. This performance was followed by an opportunity for guests to partake in a St. Brigid’s cross making workshop where they were guided by the students to weave St. Brigid’s crosses using rushes from Co. Wexford.
Photographs of the event are available to download from the Houses of the Oireachtas Flickr account.
