The Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence will hold its first public session tomorrow, Tuesday the 10th of June, at 11.30 am in Committee Room 4.
The Committee is chaired by Deputy Malcolm Byrne and includes members from the Seanad and the Dáil.
For its introductory session on Artificial Intelligence, the Committee will meet with Deputy CEO Ciarán Seoighe, Professor Alan Smeaton and Assistant Professor Susan Leavy from Research Ireland. Speaking about the first public session of the Committee and the Committee’s work programme, the Cathaoirleach Deputy Malcolm Byrne said:
“For our first public session, the Committee will meet with Research Ireland and each member of the Committee will be voicing their hopes and fears for how we use AI in Ireland. Over the course of this Committee’s lifetime, we will explore ways in which AI can ensure the more efficient delivery of public services, but also the challenges and opportunities that this new technology presents to society. In autumn, the committee will host a series of modules looking at AI in healthcare, AI in education, AI in energy and other issues. On a personal note, I am very honoured to chair this Committee and I believe the work of the Committee will assist all our understanding of artificial intelligence. The views of the public and of interested parties will be welcome, and we look forward to a public debate around how this revolutionary new technology is impacting on all our lives.”
The first public session will end with the election of the Committee Leas – Cathaoirleach.
The Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
The Committee meeting can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV. Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
