The Joint Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery meets today to discuss the role, responsibilities, and processes of An Coimisiún Pleanála and Office of the Planning Regulator

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 3:30pm in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Seán Fleming said: "Our Committee is focussed on the delivery of the National Development Plan and Ireland’s large-scale capital projects. Our remit is to scrutinise and analyse all that goes into the planning and delivery of all major projects in Ireland.  

“The Office of the Planning Regulator is tasked with a crucial role in ensuring the effectiveness and consistency of the planning system in Ireland. It is an independent office that provides oversight and guidance on planning matters, with a focus on promoting sustainable development, protecting the environment, and supporting the achievement of national and regional policy objectives. The Office of the Planning Regulator works closely with planning authorities, An Coimisiún Pleanála, and other stakeholders to ensure that planning decisions are informed, transparent, and aligned with national and regional planning policy.

"We will seek insights into their key responsibilities which include monitoring and reviewing the performance of planning authorities, providing guidance and advice on planning matters, and conducting assessments of development plans and local area plans. 

"We will look to the Office of the Planning Regulator and An Coimisiún Pleanála to outline how they promote best practice in planning, ensure accountability and support the delivery of high-quality planning outcomes that ensures beneficial outcomes for Irish infrastructure.”

The Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
