The Joint Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport will hold two separate meetings tomorrow, Wednesday November 19th on the challenges in the implementation of Coimisiún na Meán’s Code of Fairness, Impartiality and Objectivity in News and Current Affairs.
The first meeting will take place in Committee Room 1of Leinster House between 12:30-14:30.
Officials from the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport and Coimisiún na Meán will appear before the meeting.
The second meeting will take place in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House with Ivan Yates of Yewtree Infotainment Unlimited.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Alan Kelly said: "The Presidential election has highlighted the need for greater transparency around the area of individuals commenting on politics and current affairs while also providing work for political parties.
"Coimisiún na Meán has in place a Media Service Code of Fairness, Objectivity and Impartiality in News and Current Affairs in respect of radio and television broadcasters which includes obligations on broadcasters to have and implement appropriate policies and procedures to address any conflicts of interest that may exist or arise with anyone with an editorial involvement in any news or current affairs content.
"Coimisiún na Meán is carrying out a review in the matter and it is vital that the public should be able to trust that their media sources are impartial and unbiased and that any conflicts of interest are declared.
"We welcome the opportunity to hear from broadcaster and media trainer Ivan Yates to discuss transparency issues in the media sector, how they can be addressed and if stronger regulations are required.”
