Rannóg an Aistriúcháin, the Translation Section, is fundamental to the aim of being a bilingual Parliament in which Members, Houses of the Oireachtas staff and the public can be actively faciliated in using the Irish language in their daily business.
The main responsibilities of Rannóg an Aistriúcháin are the production of official translations of the Acts of the Oireachtas, the translation of material for business items discussed in the Chamber and the provision of a simultaneous interpretation service for both Houses.
Simultaneous interpretation
Members may speak in Irish or English during proceedings in the Dáil. When TDs speak in Irish in the House, their contributions are simultaneously translated for the benefit of Members who do not speak Irish. The Official Report is published in the language the speaker chose to use.
Official documents translation
Official translations of the Acts of the Oireachtas are provided. These are available on the Houses of the Oireachtas website and on achtanna.ie where Acts and their official translations can be viewed side by side. Bills are not translated apart from official translations of their Short Titles and Long Titles.
Material on the Dáil business site, some statutory instruments and Standing Orders are also translated.
