The reality is that the horticultural sector is crumbling and in dire need of assistance, particularly...First, it requests the resumption of peat harvesting from existing horticultural peat bogs for 2021,...We know most soft roots can grow without peat....We know many plants prefer to be peat free. We have become reliant on peat....I am concerned with protecting the horticultural food sector and the nursery stock sector.

Within the horticulture industry, 17,000 people are affected by this issue....This debate is about the licensing of peat in order that we can have a horticulture industry that will...This Bill is brought forward to try to give some hope to the farming community when it comes to horticulture...Horticulture is in almost every parish in our communities....I hope that the Bill is the start of that process.

It is obvious that despite their measured tones they are horrified at the direction things have taken...To be clear, the report was about 4,000 tonnes of horticultural peat which had been imported to Ireland...That peat is now being stored in Rathowen, next to where an extraction had been abandoned in 2019.

Senator Michael McDowell -----who are promoting this Bill....We now have to have some derogation simply to produce extracted peat or mined peat, if you want to use...Ministers in the various Departments, as it is a cross-departmental issue, are working on some kind of measure..., which this Bill is trying to get at, that will keep the show on the road for all those people who are...If not this Bill, which will be talked out today rather than voted on, something must happen.

The area of land for horticultural peat production in Ireland is 1,700 ha, which is 0.12% of total Irish...The carbon emissions from the area that produces horticultural peat is now less than 0.15% of total Irish...is that we want the legislation to be amended urgently in order that we can get back harvesting in 2021...and have sufficient peat to meet Irish demands....We are not just producing peat and nothing else.

I acknowledge his presence here and his meeting with representatives of the horticulture industry....for us to stand up in rural Ireland and say we are trying our best to reduce our carbon count when peat...We are not talking about burning peat or that kind of scenario....This is something to ensure our horticulture industry can survive....We did appropriate work on the climate action Bill and, in many ways, got the backing of rural Ireland

It is grossly unfair and hypocrisy at its best to talk about bringing in peat or substitute peat from...I have focused on mushrooms but there is also the general horticulture sector....Peat and milled peat are also used in forestry, particularly forestry nursery stock, and also in horticulture...We talk about sustainability and we discussed the climate action Bill, but this does not make sense....Basically, we have carbon leakage by importing peat substitutes.

saying to people that they cannot extract 0.1% of the entire peatland of the State for the purpose of horticulture...The horticulture sector would use 0.12% in total and the mushroom industry would be much less than that...We need a temporary, commonsense solution in order to sustain those jobs.

It takes ten years for 1 cm of peat to form....We must end peat extraction and exploitation here and everywhere....I am cautious about whatever emergency measures might be taken. They must be for only one year....I think that 2021 is mentioned here....I sympathise with the horticultural sector.
