There is a strong understanding in the mushroom sector and the wider horticulture sector that in the...future, peat will not play a major role in their production but we need that just transition....We need to be able to support the sector and move to that place where it is not so reliant on peat....This is from coconut husk and would have to be imported but the environmental damage would have to be measured...We must support the horticulture sector.

With regard to the horticultural sector, the horticultural peat plants at Coolnamona and Kilberry are...There is an opportunity to start using municipal waste to generate compost free from horticultural peat...This is an opportunity to use that waste to move towards more sustainable horticultural products....become a centre for training and apprenticeships in the new skills required for installing green energy measures...peat and sod fuel, for example.

Change is needed but it does not necessarily have to be part of this Bill....This goes back to where Senator Boyhan started with the mushroom and horticulture industry....We ceased peat production before having an alternative....While I say the amendments today will not change anything, there is one issue outside the scope of this Bill...He needs to get Irish peat back into the mushroom and horticulture plants until such time as an alternative

Regarding the future use of peat moss in the horticulture sector, last September, the Minister of State...moss in the horticultural industry....It has addressed the key issues raised in the report itself, including future use of peat by the horticulture...growing media for horticultural production in this area in its latest research call for 2021....The budget has increased to €9 million, which is a 50% increase, for 2021.

The interim report effectively recommended that peat harvesting continue throughout 2021 under emergency...a full EIA, and release the industry from the requirement of a licence for a limited time, that is, 2021...We submitted to the working group, which submitted to the Departments, the heads of a Bill that would...This is a disaster for the horticultural industry, an industry that we need to build up....It certainly appears to be a case of anything but peat.

Every effort we make as individuals is worthwhile, and we should remain committed to these measures....We have seen a situation arise in which shiploads of horticultural peat are being imported into this...peat....This is a measure that runs counter to the purpose for which the ban on horticultural peat harvesting...We will support this Bill.
