We have seen that in successive budgets, with the old age pension increasing....We increased the number of home care packages....Last year we had 1,100 and have increased that this year by an extra 2,000 throughout the country.

times; not only is that increase inadequate in 1996 but it does nothing to compensate for pensioners...Before Christmas it had increased to 285,000....I welcome the £3 increase in the carer's allowance, the increase from £10,000 to £15,000 in the back...The three heads of Government and their armies of special advisers and handlers are pulling in different...It is not good for pensioners, the unemployed, taxpayers or business.

It can increase but, having increased, it should remain increased....One would be shocked if widows' pensions were to be provided out of this fund, because next year there...would be no widows' pension because the fund would be gone....It may well be right that it should be increased from time to time, or that it should be changed back...The Bill represents a very fair expansion of the original Funds of Suitors Bill presented to this House

In setting that context, I welcome some of the increases that relate to old age benefit, maternity benefit...In terms of collective responsibility, while the small increases are welcome, the Department of Education...I have a query as regards pensions....Where a pensioner has a spouse who is in receipt of a pension, he or she is not entitled to a contributory...pension and must depend on a partner.

I am not at all satisfied with the amount of pensions proposed to be granted under this Bill....should have some idea of the amount of money that is going to be devoted to compensation under this Bill...I would ask that before the Bill passes through its remaining stages that the amount of money should...I want to know whether the Minister at a later stage will consider amendments to increase the amount...No member of the Dáil, except a Minister, can move a motion increasing an estimate of this kind.
