The 1987 records were released on 1 January 2018 whereas the papers released in the UK on that date related...It is important to have a synchronised release of official records in order that we can ensure, as both...That is why the Bill is very important....to ensure that records over 20 years old which are of significant historic or public interest can be released...I thank the Deputies for their co-operation in expediting the passage of the Bill.

Deputy Thomas Byrne I sincerely thank my colleague, Deputy Jim O'Callaghan, for bringing this Bill...Statistics have been massaged over recent years....released on my own constituency today....of State must show the seriousness of his intent and his approach by supporting Deputy O'Callaghan's Bill...I sincerely hope that the House supports this Bill tomorrow because we have had enough.

Fourth Stage and allow time for amending, but I am inclined to think that there is urgency about the Bill...If we are to take the Census in April this Bill ought to go to the Seanad well before the end of February...I am not taking up the attitude that I want to prevent statistics being collected....about which we cannot get statistics at present and about which we ought to have figures....the Department of Local Government consider that they can get any information which was got in any census

Deputy Heather Humphreys The Senator has rightly pointed out that an addition is being made to the Bill...notwithstanding the significant resourcing issues involved, it is important to provide for the early release...The UK and Northern Ireland are releasing their material after 20 years....We need to release similar material from our records so that the full picture is reflected....That is why a new provision is to be included in the Bill.

The Bill was introduced in Dáil Éireann one year ago, on 14 December 2017....In 2017, 12% of all crimes committed were by persons who were out on bail for other offences....Statistics from the CSO, which are published under reservation, indicate there is a problem....On the basis of an evidence-based analysis and the statistics, however, it is clearly the case that burglary...We need to deal with this problem because statistically it is clearly a problem.
