I would think, in any event, that it would be advisable to have it in this Defamation Bill....There is a special clause in the Civil Liability Bill dealing with libel and slander....It would be much better to have it in the Defamation Bill.

Parliamentary Secretary has arrived, may I say how appropriate it is that Fianna Fáil should be dealing with a Defamation...Bill because they are past masters in relation to it?

Sweetman This Section 28 is I think in the 1952 British Bill....A thing I do not understand at all is what is intended to be the difference in the law of defamation...It seems to me that in relation to the law of defamation the appropriate way, for example, of putting...Parliamentary Secretary is taking it out here purely because he prefers to have it in the Civil Liability Bill...have a second look at Section 27 in the light of the contribution provisions of the Civil Liability Bill

Are we to look at the Defamation Bill, which is supposed to be a consolidated measure, and find that...in fact it is not, and that we have to go to the Civil Liability Bill and if we find that the situation...I think it would be better to leave it in this Bill.

It was consolidated into the Defamation Act 1961, which requires them to register in accordance with...When the Department of Justice saw this new Bill coming along, they said there was no point in retaining...the provision in question in the Defamation Act....It is simply a registration requirement and has nothing to do with defamation....The provisions of the Defamation Act relating to defamation are quite unaltered.

Mulcahy Will the Leader ask the Taoiseach or the Minister for Justice when the proposed legislation on defamation...the Minister for Justice gave a commitment to the other House before voting down a Private Members' Bill...on defamation that a new Bill would be brought forward....The Leader will be aware the National Newspapers of Ireland called for the reform of the law on defamation...which dates back to 1961.
