    2 Dec 1948 - Mr. de Valera Section 5 sets out that "This Act may be cited as the Republic of Ireland Act, 1948."...came from the draftsman's office in that form—from my experience I would be greatly surprised that a Bill...purporting to do what this Bill does would be described as a Republic of Ireland Bill.

    1 Dec 1948 - I was anxious that the 21st January, if at all possible, should be the date fixed for bringing this Bill...I would still appeal to the Government to try to have the Bill brought into operation on that date in...Then there was a date mentioned in 1937 and now we have dates mentioned in 1948 and 1949....I would appeal to the Government if at all possible to bring the Bill into operation on the 21st January...next, that is the 30th Anniversary of the declaration of the republic.
