Broughan The Greyhound Rescue Association told us that, between 2010 and 2015, almost 3,000 of our greyhounds...surrendered to dog pounds, of which 2,500 were destroyed and 400 were, thankfully, homed or collected by welfare...The Government needs to address what is a major welfare issue....Dogs Trust, which helped me to draft the Bill on a white list, recently launched the #Greywatch campaign...I would like the Department to consider that urgently and include it in the Bill.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Deputy Brendan Smith) As I announced on Friday 2nd July 2010..., I will introduce legislation in the Autumn to amend the Greyhound Industries Act 1958 to put the welfare...standards for greyhounds on a statutory basis....I intend to give statutory effect to the current very comprehensive guide for the care and welfare of...greyhounds published by Bord na gCon.

Broughan The Minister and Minister of State are hoping to introduce the greyhound industry (amendment...) Bill shortly....standards to which the export of greyhounds will be forbidden....As the Minister and Minister of State know, I introduced the small Welfare of Greyhounds (Amendment)...Bill this time last year.

of Greyhounds Bill 2010 before Seanad Éireann and look forward to an informed and constructive debate...For the purposes of the Bill, greyhounds are defined as all greyhounds entered in the Irish greyhound...Act 2010, where relevant....I am confident the provisions for the welfare of greyhounds in this Bill and the extensive powers given...as welfare officers under the Bill.

If the welfare of greyhounds is central to the Bill we will see real action when it comes to their welfare...I would have included the greyhound Bill had it been passed....Act and I hope it will apply to the greyhound Bill also....Act 2010 are good on paper, or at least aspects of them are....Breeding Establishment Act 2010.

Deputy Andrew Doyle Draft heads of a Bill are being prepared for pre-legislative scrutiny....At the time, we were hoping to have the Bill ready for the pre-legislative scrutiny process....Essentially the new greyhound Bill is based on the Welfare of Greyhounds Act.

Although we can only try to do our best with implementing the Bill's provisions, they must be in the Bill...This is an opportunity for us to signal that we are serious about greyhound welfare....I might save that until the Bill has been taken further. We have the documentary evidence....If we care about greyhounds and their welfare, we will do our best to ensure that they do not end up...It is thanks to welfare groups that it is now realised that greyhounds make good pets.

There are still opportunities to greatly strengthen areas of the Bill, especially on animal welfare....Almost two years ago, I introduced the Welfare of Greyhounds (Amendment) Bill 2017 to amend the Welfare...It also stated that welfare of greyhounds continues its number one priority....and 2011 to just over 2,500 in 2016, with more than 18,000 greyhounds born in 2010 declining to 15,000...statistics for 2010 to 2015.

As he knows, we will discuss an animal welfare motion later....Has he given any more thought to the Welfare of Greyhounds (Amendment) Bill which I introduced and integrating...it into the Bill he will bring forward to regulate the industry?

Industry Bill....This draft Bill provides an opportunity to protect Irish greyhounds from export to countries for racing...We are proposing an amendment to the Greyhound Industry Bill which provides for a regime to ban the export...This Bill, if adopted, will allow for the welfare members of the International Greyhound Forum, IGF –...the Greyhound Industry Bill.

Deputy Maureen O'Sullivan What is central to the Bill is the welfare of greyhounds and there are considerable...welfare issues relating to greyhounds....I am looking at the Bill in the context of our other animal welfare legislation, which we know has not...With regard to the Bill we have greyhound racing, hare coursing and the export of greyhounds....While greyhounds are used for racing or coursing there is also the question of the welfare of those greyhounds
