MINISTERIAL MOTIONS. - SPIRIT LICENCES AND SPIRIT TRAFFIC.
The SECRETARY FOR HOME AFFAIRS drew attention to the evil effects of the unrestricted manufacture of poteen, and suggested that the Dáil might consider the question of licensing the sale of it with a view to bringing it under proper control.
P. O MAILLE (Connemara) moved, and W. SEARS (Mayo South) seconded:
"That the question be referred to the Secretary for Finance with a view to imposing taxation on the sale of spirituous liquors and to stopping the manufacture of inferior brands."
SEAN MAC AN TSAOI (Monaghan South) moved, and S. MAC DONNACHADHA (Tipperary North) seconded:—
"That consideration of the question be deferred for twelve months."
The amendment was put to a division and declared carried by 24 votes to 12. The amendment was then put as a substantive motion.
The SECRETARY FOR FINANCE moved, and Dr. CROWLEY (Mayo North) seconded, as a further amendment:—
"That the question be examined in detail and a report submitted at a future meeting."
This amendment was put and agreed to. It was then put as a substantive motion and carried.
