Vol. 1 No. 17

DEBATES ON ADJOURNMENT. - ARTICLE 27. ELECTION FOR THE CHAMBER.

Mr. O'HIGGINS:

Article 27 reads:— "At a General Election for the Chamber/Dáil Eireann'the polls shall be held on the same day throughout the country, and that day shall be a day not later than thirty days after the date of the dissolution, and shall be proclaimed a public holiday. The Chamber/ Dáil Eireann shall meet within one month of such day, and shall unless earlier dissolved, continue for four years from the date of its first meeting, and not longer. The Chamber/Dáil Eireann may not any time, be dissolved except on the advice of the Executive Council." I move that that Article stand part of the Bill.

Mr. G. GAVAN DUFFY:

The amendment I have on the Paper is one which I think should be deferred until the next reading, because it was consequential upon the amendment suggested on Article 24, in reference to which the Ministry desired to consult. I agree that the amendment should stand over.

AN CEANN COMHAIRLE:

The same applies to this amendment as in the case of Article 24. The Clause will be passed, subject to the very same proviso.

The Dáil agreed, and Article 27 was adopted and added to the Bill.
