Vol. 1 No. 20

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. - LOOTING BY CROWN FORCES IN 1919—1921.

TOMAS O CONAILL

To ask the Minister for Finance, whether persons whose premises were looted by Crown Forces during the period January 21st, 1919, to July 11th, 1921, are entitled to claim compensation under the Shaw Commission, and if not will he say what provision has been or will be made to compensate persons who suffered losses by raids and looting during this period.

The Compensation (Ireland) Commission, presided over by Lord Shaw, have decided that claims founded on larceny do not fall under the Malicious Injuries Acts, and are thus beyond the terms of their reference, and this decision now governs procedure before them. The question as to whether compensation can be made to persons who suffered losses by looting is still under consideration.

Mr. O'CONNELL

Does larceny in this connection mean looting, or does looting mean larceny?

Yes, that is an elegant description of it.
