Vol. 1 No. 25

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. - FARMERS AND INCOME TAX.

SEAN O RUANAIDH

To ask the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the enormous losses sustained by farmers during the year 1921, it is proposed to remit the income tax due for that year; and whether, in view of the unprofitable condition of the farming industry at the present time, he will consider the advisability of making some special reductions for the year 1922.

MINISTER for FINANCE

It is not proposed to make any general remission of income tax for the year 1921-22 in the case of farmers. The position is fully provided for in the Income Tax Acts. It is open to any farmer to claim relief by notifying the Inspector of Taxes and proving that the profits from farming fell short of the amount assessed. As regards the year 1922-23, the basis of assessment has already been reduced by half.
