Vol. 2 No. 40

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ ORAL ANSWERS. ] - EJECTMENT OF TENANTS.

To ask the Minister for Finance if his attention has been called to the fact that notices threatening ejectment have been issued by landlords, both head landlords and middle landlords, to tenants in O'Connell Street whose premises were destroyed during hostilities of last June, and who have, therefore, been deprived of the incomes from the receipt of which such rents would have been payable? If it is a fact that, if such ejectments proceed, the landlords in question will receive due compensation, although it is the tenants businesses that have been destroyed? And if, having regard to these circumstances, he will make such additions to the Criminal and Malicious Injuries (Amendment) Bill, now before the Oireachtas, as will give a general stay in all such cases?

In view of Clause 6 of the Bill, which excludes compensation for consequential loss, such as presumably loss of rent, no question seems to arise of a landlord getting compensation from the State for anything beyond damage to a structure which he owns. I cannot see that there is any case for an amendment of the Bill in this respect.
