Vol. 2 No. 44

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - ARRESTED TEACHERS' SALARIES.

To ask the Minister for Defence whether his Department has issued orders to the Ministry of Education not to pay salary to certain teachers, who apparently are suspected by the Military Authorities of connection with the forces in operation against the Government; if so, will he state what action is usually taken by the Military to investigate the truth of the alleged reports or charges, if he is aware that some teachers, because of such reports, have not received salary for over six months, although they have worked constantly in their schools in the meantime, and will he take immediate steps to put an end to such a very unsatisfactory state of affairs.

In fifteen cases representations have been made to the Ministry for Education that National Teachers have been assisting the Irregulars by activities of a propagandist nature. In some of these cases the dispensing with their services has been suggested to that Ministry. The reports of responsible Military Officers have been considered to warrant the making of such representations. These cases took place prior to December last. The present practice is to bring such people to actual trial before approaching the Ministry of Education on the matter.
