Vol. 3 No. 17

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ ORAL ANSWERS. ] - ARMY COOKS' PAY.

asked the Minister for Defence whether it is a fact that Army cooks receive no grade pay such as is paid to soldiers doing special work; and, if so, whether, in view of the long hours worked and the important work done by these men, he will consider their case with a view to grading them for pay purposes.

There are two classes of men doing cooking work in the Army at the moment—civilians who are cooks by trade and who are receiving wages based on standard civil rates of pay, and soldiers who are given only ordinary rates of Army pay. In the cases of soldiers doing special work, additional pay as a rule is issued only to qualified tradesmen. However, the position of cooks in the Army is about to receive consideration.
