Vol. 6 No. 12

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - RECONSTRUCTION OF MILITARY BARRACKS.

asked the Minister for Defence whether any decision has been arrived at as to the reconstruction, and, if so, to what extent, of Fermoy and Buttevant Military Barracks, and if he is aware that owing to the loss of trade, markets and employment in these towns and districts resulting from the evacuation of the large British garrisons formerly stationed there, and to the non-payment by the Free State Government of the contributions in lieu of local rates paid before the destruction of these barracks, the towns have suffered to such an extent that it is necessary some effective steps should be taken to alleviate during the transition period the stagnation of trade and the absolute want of local employment.

It has not yet been possible to arrive at a decision as to the necessity for rebuilding the barracks mentioned.
