Vol. 6 No. 16

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - OFFENCES UNDER PUBLIC SAFETY ACT.

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Home Affairs if he will state the number of offences, to which Section 5 (4) of the Public Safety (Emergency Powers) Act, 1923, applies, committed since the passing of that Act, and the number of offences of the same character committed in periods of equal length before the passing of the Act before the European War, in or about the year 1918, and in the year 1922.

The number of offences dealt with in Section 5 (4) of the Public Safety (Emergency Powers) Act, 1923, which were committed in Saorstát Eireann since the passing of the Act, is 738; as regards the period from August, 1922, to February, 1923, the number of cases of a similar nature was 1,502. Owing to the destruction of official records, it is not possible to give the figures for the years 1914 or 1918.
