Vol. 6 No. 18

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS ORAL ANSWERS. - INTERNATIONAL LABOUR OFFICE CONVENTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS.

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is proposed to ratify or adopt the Convention on hours of Labour, the recommendations on Unemployment Insurance and measures for dealing with Unemployment, the Conventions and Recommendations for the protection of women and children, or other Conventions and Recommendations agreed upon by representatives of foreign Governments and employers' and workers' organisations at Conferences of the International Labour Office, to which the Saorstát is now affiliated.

Mr. O'HIGGINS (for Minister for Industry and Commerce)

Some of the Conventions and Recommendations referred to are embodied in existing laws. The ratification or adoption of others and of Conventions and Recommendations agreed upon from time to time at Conferences of the International Labour Organisation will be considered on the merits of each case, due regard being given to the general interests of the Saorstát.

It is contemplated that any Convention or Recommendation, the adoption of which would involve changes in the existing position, will be submitted for the consideration of the Oireachtas before it is ratified by the Government.

Can the Minister say whether any of these Conventions are at present under consideration?

Mr. O'HIGGINS

I understand they are.

Can the Minister say which of them?
