Vol. 7 No. 11

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - QUALIFICATION FOR ROAD GRANT.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he can supply a copy of the specification to which County Councils must work to qualify for the road grant.

No general specification is issued in connection with works being carried out under the recent road grant.

The scheme of proposed works of each County Council is prepared by the County Surveyor and is examined by the Ministry's road engineer.

The nature of the traffic borne by the roads in respect of which grants are given varies from the extremely intensive traffic of the cities Dublin and Cork to the comparatively light traffic in remote country districts. It would be desirable and it is the intention to fix a standard for trunk road surfaces but, varying as they do between such wide limits in the cost of their upkeep, no uniform standard has has been found to be possible up to the present.
