Vol. 8 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - STOPPAGE OF ARMY PENSION.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that Sergeant-Major Bain (Behan), 20 Courtney Place, Ballybough Road, Dublin, who joined the National Army in March, 1922, died as a result of wounds received at the taking of the Four Courts; whether a pension or gratuity of 7s. per week to his sister was stopped on 3rd April, 1924, and if he will state the grounds upon which the pension or gratuity was stopped.

Sergeant-Major Bain (or Behan) died on the 1st July, 1922, as a result of wounds received on active service. Payment of dependent's allowance, which had been issued to his sister at the rate of 7s. a week, was continued until the 29th December last. Miss Bain's claim to pension or gratuity under the provisions of the Army Pensions Act, 1923, has been disallowed on the grounds that she was not wholly dependent on her brother and that the necessities of the case did not justify the making of any additional award. Miss Bain was informed accordingly on the 3rd April last.
