Vol. 8 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - A LIFFORD ARMY ACCOUNT.

asked the Minister for Defence whether the officer concerned in the bill of £16 12s., due to Mrs. Argue, of Lifford, has yet been discovered; whether this officer signed and certified as correct the bill furnished to his department; whether Mrs. Argue, some months ago, received a cheque for £55 to pay this account, which she returned, and whether her original account of £16 12s. is still unpaid.

It is regretted that the identity of the officer who signed and certified an account for £11 12s. claimed by Mrs. Argue for billeting has not yet been established. Every effort is being made to have this amount and a further amount in respect of cartage discharged as early as possible.

The cheque of £55 referred to was issued in error on 31st March, 1924, in respect of an account previously discharged. It was duly returned by Mrs. Argue.

Arising out of the reply, in view of the fact that Mrs. Argue did not take advantage of that cheque sent to her which she could have easily cashed and returned the balance, would the Ministry not see its way to pay the account immediately? Further, the officer concerned signed the bill and vouched it as correct.

In the absence of the certifying officer the matter will be attended to.
