Vol. 9 No. 10

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - BRITISH GRANTS FOR HOUSING.

asked the President whether he is aware that in the allocation of the Saorstát share of the recent British Grant for the erection of houses for ex-soldiers and sailors the Committee responsible determined on one hundred and fifty such houses for the Cork City area at a cost of £800 per house: whether the British Treasury has now sought to reduce this sum to £500 per house, and whether, in the event of such reduction being insisted on, representations will be made to the effect that the total sum involved in the higher figure will be expended in this area: also, if he will state whether the British Government intends to make further grants towards housing schemes of this nature in the Saorstát in fulfilment of its promise to ex-soldiers and sailors.

As the Deputy is probably aware, the allocation of money provided from British sources for the housing of ex-soldiers and sailors of the British Forces is a concern of the British Government. I will seek information on the matter from the Colonial Office, London, and communicate with the Deputy as soon as possible.
